ÜBER DAS EHRENMAL

Das U-Boot-Ehrenmal auf der Möltenorter Schanze in Heikendorf bei Kiel ist dem Gedenken aller auf See gebliebenen Ubootfahrer Deutscher Marinen gewidmet. Hier sind mehr als 35.000 Namen der gefallenen Ubootfahrer der beiden Weltkriege auf Bronzetafeln verewigt. Auch der Soldaten, die im Frieden ihr Leben auf Ubooten ließen, wird hier gedacht. Es ist aber zugleich auch eine Gedenkstätte für alle Opfer des Ubootkrieges. Das Ehrenmal ist ein Ort der Stille, des Gedenkens, der Erinnerung und Besinnung, aber auch der Mahnung gegen Krieg und Gewalt.

Eigentümer des Ehrenmals ist der Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V. Die Stiftung U-Boot-Ehrenmal Möltenort unterhält in Zusammenarbeit mit der U-Bootkameradschaft Kiel die Anlage. Unterstützt wird sie dabei vom Verband Deutscher U-Bootfahrer e.V., von der Deutschen Marine und dem Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge. Die Stiftung wurde 1975 von der U-Bootkameradschaft Kiel mit dem Ziel der Pflege und Bauunterhaltung der Gedenkstätte gegründet.

ABOUT THE MEMORIAL

The U-boat Memorial at Möltenort, Germany is dedicated to the memory of all U-boat men of German Navies who lost their life at sea. The U-Boat memorial is located at Möltenort at the east shore of the Kiel Bay in Germany. More than 35.000 names of the fallen German U-boat men of both World Wars are deceased on bronze plates. The memorial also serves the memory of submariners who lost their life in times of peace. But as well it is a memorial for all victims of the U-boat War.

Owner of the U-Boat Memorial is the German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V.). The Möltenort U-boat Memorial Foundation (Stiftung U-Boot-Ehrenmal Möltenort) maintains the memorial site in cooperation with the Submariners Association of Kiel. The German Submariners Association (VDU), the German Navy, and the German War Graves Commission support the maintenance of the memorial.

EIN ORT DER ERINNERUNG UND BESINNUNG

Weit sichtbar ist das Wahrzeichen des Ostseebades Heikendorf, der mächtige 4,60 m hohe Adler auf dem roten 15,30 m hohen Wesersandsteinpfeiler mit dem U-Boot-Kriegsabzeichen.

Das Ehrenmal liegt an der engsten Stelle der Kieler Förde, der Möltenorter Schanze. Es ist die einzige gemeinsame Gedenkstätte der Uboofahrer Deutscher Marinen, die in Ausübung ihres Dienstes ihr Leben auf See ließen.

Die große Aussagekraft dieser Gedenkstätte wird im entscheidenden Maße durch ihren inneren Ausbau geprägt. Im halb-kreisförmigen, in die Erde eingelassenen Rundgang, sind auf 117 Bronzetafeln die Namen der über fünfunddreißigtausend Gefallenen der beiden Weltkriege nach Bootsbezeichnungen, Unglücksort und Unglücksart verzeichnet. Auf dem Vorplatz der Anlage sind die Standvitrinen mit den Positionsplänen der im 1. und 2. Weltkrieg verloren gegangenen Boote aufgestellt. Die große menschliche Tragik wird dem Besucher deutlich, wenn er die endlosen Namensketten auf den Bronzetafeln mit der kurzen, unvollständigen Lebensgeschichte von der Geburt bis zum frühen Tod verinnerlicht hat.

Die in der nördlichen Ehrenhalle angebrachte Bronzetafel ist dem Gedenken der Ubootfahrer der Deutschen Marinen gewidmet, die in Friedenszeiten ums Leben gekommen sind. So wird hier unter anderem auch der 19 Toten des am 14.09.1966 gesunkenen Ubootes "Hai" gedacht. In einem in Bronze geschlagenen Gebet des Pfarrers Kordecki in der südlichen Ehrenhalle wird derer gedacht, die Opfer der Kämpfe oder sonst wie Opfer der See wurden, einzeln durch Unfälle bzw. durch unzählige Schiffs- und Flutkatastrophen. Eigentümer der Gedenkstätte ist der Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge. Die U-Bootkameradschaft Kiel hat 1975 in Möltenort die Stiftung "U-Boot-Ehrenmal Möltenort" gegründet. Während die Stiftung die laufende Pflege und Bauunterhaltung übernommen hat, betreut die U-Bootkameradschaft Kiel diese Gedenkstätte. Damit sind die Voraussetzungen geschaffen, diese Stätte auch für die Zukunft in würdiger Form zu erhalten. Ein bedeutender Politiker hat einmal gesagt: "Der Mensch vergisst, aber zuweilen vergisst er, so fürchte ich, zu leicht und zu schnell". Diesem Vergessen entgegenzuwirken, darauf ist unter anderem auch die Arbeit der Stiftung ausgerichtet.

Seit dem 6. März 1990 steht das Ehrenmal unter Denkmalschutz. Weitere ausführliche Informationen über das U-Boot-Ehrenmal sind in einer Broschüre enthalten, die unter anderem beim Fremdenverkehrsbüro in Möltenort bzw. am U-Boot-Ehrenmal erworben werden kann.

A PLACE OF MEMORY AND MEDITATION

The landmark of the Baltic village Heikendorf, the mighty 4.60 m high eagle on top of the red 15.30 m high Weser sandstone pillar with the submarine-war badge is far visible.

The memorial is located at the narrowest place of the Kiel Fjord. It is the only common memorial of the submarine men of German Navies who left their life on sea.

The great expressiveness of this memorial is stamped in the determining masses by their internal extension. In the semicircle-shaped walk set in the earth, the names of more than 35000 fallen of both world wars are registered on 117 bronze boards after boat names, position and cause of sinking. On the forecourt of the arrangement two glass cabinets contain position plans of the boats lost in the 1st and 2nd world war. The great human tragedy becomes clear to the visitor if he has internalised the endless name chains on the bronze boards with the short, incomplete biography by the birth up to the early death.

xThe bronze plate right in the northern honorary hall is dedicated to the memory of the U-boat men of German Navies who have blost their lifes in peacetime. Among others, the plate also reminds of the 19 dead U-boat men of the German submarine "Hai" (shark) which sunk on September 14, 1966. In a prayer of the priest Kordecki on a bronze plate in the southern honorary hall it is meant of those which victims of the battles or some other way victims the sea became, individually by casualties or by countless ship and flood disasters. Owner of the Memorial is the German War Graves Commission. The U-boat Veterans Association of Kiel in 1975 founded the Möltenort U-boat Memorial Foundation. While the Möltenort U-boat Memorial Foundation has taken over the maintenance and construction upkeep, the U-boat Veterans Association of Kiel looks after the memorial. This guarantees that the site is kept in worthy shape for the future. A significant politician has said once: " The person forgets, but now and again he forgets, I fear, too easily and too fast ". Among others, one goal of the Memorial Foundation is to counteract against this forgetting.

xSince the 6th March, 1990 the Memorial stands under conservation of monuments and historic buildings. Further detailed information about the U-boat Memorial is contained in a brochure which can be acquired, among the rest, at the tourism office in Möltenort or at the U-boat Memorial.

Öffnungszeiten und Anfahrt

Das U-Boot-Ehrenmal in Möltenort steht Besuchern vom 1. April bis 30. September täglich von 09:00 bis 18:00 Uhr und vom 1. Oktober bis 31. März täglich von 09:00 bis 16:00 Uhr offen. Der Besuch der Gedenkstätte ist kostenlos.

Wir bitten alle Besucher, das Ehrenmal als Ort der Einkehr und des Gedenkens zu achten und danken allen, die durch Spenden an die Stiftung U-Boot-Ehrenmal Möltenort oder tätige Mithilfe zur Pflege und Erhaltung des Ehrenmals beigetragen.

OPENING TIMES AND LOCATION

The memorial is open to visitors from April 1st til September 30th daily between 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and from October 1st til March 31st daily between 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The visit of the memorial is free of charge.

We request all visitors to respect the mermorial as a place of reflection and memory. We thank all those who help us to keep the memorial by donations or by cooperation.

EINE GEDENKSTÄTTE FÜR ALLE AUF SEE GEBLIEBENEN DEUTSCHEN UBOOTFAHRER

Schon seit vielen Jahren war es der Wunsch der Ubootflottille, dass im Ehrenmal eine Tafel für die in Ausübung ihres Dienstes ums Leben gekommen Ubootfahrer der Deutschen Marine angebracht wird. Nach vielen Gesprächen und ausführlichem Schriftwechsel mit den verschiedenen Entscheidungsträgern, hat die Stiftung sich 1999 erneut dem Anliegen, einen Gedenkstein für die Toten von "U-Hai" am U-Boot-Ehrenmal aufzustellen, angenommen und die Aufstellung einstimmig beschlossen. Der Inspekteur der Marine hat diese Entscheidung mit Schreiben vorn 22. April 1999 sehr begrüßt, da sie auch dem Wunsch der Ubootfahrer in der Marine entgegenkommt, aller Angehöriger der Ubootwaffe, die ihr Leben auf See ließen, am Ehrenmal zu gedenken. Gleichzeitig hat der Inspekteur der Marine die Stiftung gebeten, mit dem Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge (VDK) zu prüfen, ob das Ehrenmal mit einer Widmung versehen werden kann, die alle Ubootfahrer Deutscher Marinen einschließt. Im Februar 2000 haben die Stiftungsgremien diesen Vorschlag einstimmig befürwortet und dem VDK Vorschläge für die Umwidmung unterbreitet. Bereits am 23. März 2000 wurden mit den Vertretern des VDK in Möltenort Einvernehmen über die von der Stiftung vorgeschlagene Umwidmung - Einbeziehung der Deutschen Marine - erzielt. Im September 2000 wurde die vorhandene Bronzetafel im Rundgang mit der Widmung:

"ZUM GEDENKEN ALLER TOTEN
DER U-BOOTWAFFE BEIDER WELTKRIEGE
1914 - 1918 UND 1939 - 1945"

durch eine neue Bronzetafel mit folgender Inschrift ersetzt:

"IN EHRENDEM GEDENKEN
FÜR DIE AUF SEE GEBLIEBENEN
DEUTSCHEN U-BOOT-FAHRER"

In der nördlichen Ehrenhalle wurde eine Bronzetafel zum Gedenken an die Toten der drei in Friedenszeiten gesunkenen Uboote U3 (17.1.1911), U8 (20.11.1936) und U-Hai (14.9.1966) und aller in Ausübung ihres Dienstes ums Leben gekommenen Ubootfahrer angebracht. Die drei Boote auf dieser Tafel sind im Halbrelief abgebildet.

Am Tag vor dem Volkstrauertag, am 18. November 2000, wurden die Tafeln unter großer Beteiligung der Ubootflottille aus Eckernförde eingeweiht. Somit ist das U-Boot-Ehrenmal nun auch zur Gedenkstätte für die heutigen Ubootfahrer geworden, so dass auch damit die innere Verbundenheit der Deutschen Marine zum Ehrenmal hergestellt wird. In den Stiftungsgremien und am U-Boot-Ehrenmal sind die heutigen Ubootfahrer schon seit einigen Jahren tätig, so dass es endlich an der Zeit war, auch diesen letzten Schritt gemeinsam mit allen Beteiligten zu vollziehen.

Der Kommandeur der Ubootflottille, Kapitän zur See Fritz Rudolf Weber, hat in seiner Ansprache am U-Boot-Ehrenmal in Möltenort anlässlich des Volkstrauertages am 17. November 2001 auf die Umwidmung Bezug genommen. Zitat: "...Doch die Zeit ist nicht stehen geblieben und inzwischen, mit der Umwidmung des Ubootehrenmals, hat sich die Bedeutung dieser Stätte gewandelt. Wir bezeugen nicht nur mehr unseren Respekt vor den für Deutschland bis 1945 gefallenen Ubootfahrern. Wir haben endlich die Brücke zur Deutschen Marine und deren Ubootflottille geschlagen und beziehen in unser Gedenken nunmehr alle nicht aus dem Einsatz zurückgekehrten deutschen Ubootfahrer ein..."

A MEMORIAL FOR ALL GERMAN SUBMARINERS WHO LOST THEIR LIFE AT SEA

xAlready for many years (since 1983) it is the wish of the U-boat Flotilla of the German Navy that in the memorial a bronze plate is appropriated in memento of the submariners of the German Federal Republic Navy / German Navy who have lost their lives on sea. After many conversations during the last years with the different decision-makers, the foundation agreed to erect a stone for the dead soldiers of submarine "U Hai" (shark) at the memorial, and has decided the installation unanimously. The inspector of the German Navy has appreciated this decision with a letter from 22nd April, 1999 very much, because it also meets the wish of the U-boat men in the navy to think all members of the U-boat weapon who left their life at sea, at the memorial. At the same time the inspector of the Navy has asked the foundation to check with the German War Graves Commission, whether the memorial could be provided with a dedication which encloses all U-boat men of German Navies. In February, 2000 the foundation committees have recommended this proposal unanimously and submits to the presented it to the German War Graves Commission. Already on the 23rd of March, 2000 in Möltenort an agreement about the re-dedication recommended by the foundation (inclusion of the German Navy) was achieved with representatives of the German War Graves Commission. In September, 2000 the already existing bronze plate in the memorial round:

"TO THE MEMORY OF ALL DEAD PEOPLE OF THE U-BOAT WEAPON OF BOTH WORLD WARS 1914 - 1918 AND 1939 - 1945"

..was substituted by a bonze plate with the following text:

"IN HONORARY MEMORY FOR THE GERMAN U-BOAT MEN FALLEN ON SEA"

In of the northern honorary hall the following bronze plate has been installed. Three boats are illustrated in the half relief on the bronze plate.

During the day beftafel-nord1ore the German national day of mourning, on the 18th of November, 2000, the plates were initiated with participation of the German U-boat Flotilla from Eckernförde. Now therefore the U-boat Memorial has also become the memorial for the today's U-boat sailors, so that with it the attachment of the German Navy to the memorial was established. The today's U-boat men are already represented for some years in the foundation committees, so that it was, finally, in the time to carry out this last step together with all involved parties.

xThe commander of the German U-boat Flotilla, Captain Fritz Rudolf Weber, has referred in his address on the occasion of the German national day of mourning on the 17th of November, 2001 at the U-boat Memorial at Möltenort to the re-dedication of the memorial. Citation: "... However, the time has not stopped and, in the meantime, with the re-dedication of the U-boat Memorial, the importance of this site has changed. We testify not only more our respect before the U-boat men fallen for Germany till 1945. Finally, we have hit the bridge to the German Navy and their U-boat Flotilla we now refer in our memory all German U-boat men not returned from their mission ... "
